Stepping onto the Trading Floor

Winter Internship — Motilal Oswal Financial Services | December 2024

A two-week immersion that turned the stock market from something abstract into something I could analyse, question, and understand.
Worked closely with an Equity Analyst on real-world research, stock screening, and industry analysis.

During my Grade 10 winter break, I had the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the fast-paced environment of Motilal Oswal Financial Services at their MG Road office in Bangalore. At that age, being exposed to corporate finance was both exciting and eye-opening. What began as a short holiday internship quickly became a meaningful introduction to how the Indian stock market actually works.

Under the guidance of my mentor, Mr. Rishab Marda (Equity Analyst), and alongside a highly supportive team, I spent two weeks immersed in the day-to-day functioning of a full-service brokerage and wealth management firm.

What I Worked On

  • Market Research & Analysis: Gathered data, studied trends, and began understanding how analysts interpret market movements to form actionable insights.
  • Stock Screening: Learned how to filter and identify potential investment opportunities using key financial and market parameters.
  • Industry Presentation: Researched an industry and presented its structure, key drivers, and outlook in a clear, client-focused manner.
  • Report Preparation: Assisted in compiling and structuring reports, learning how large volumes of data are translated into concise, usable insights.

What I Learned

  • Fundamental & Technical Analysis (Basics): Exposure to both, with a stronger focus on fundamental analysis—understanding financial statements, business models, and what drives long-term value.
  • Equity Markets: What it truly means to own shares and how prices respond to supply, demand, and company performance.
  • Market Dynamics: How news, earnings, and broader economic factors shape investor sentiment.
  • Analytical Thinking: Looking beyond stock prices to understand the real businesses behind them.

Skills I Built

  • Financial Literacy: Interpreting data, identifying trends, and forming structured observations.
  • Communication: Presenting ideas clearly and confidently while working with professionals.
  • Adaptability: Quickly grasping new concepts and delivering accurate work in a fast-paced environment.

This internship was a turning point for me. It transformed the stock market from something distant into something logical and genuinely fascinating. I am grateful to Mr. Rishab Marda and the team at Motilal Oswal for their mentorship and for giving me such early exposure to the world of equity research.
